If you live outside the Netherlands and are facing a Dutch inheritance, the process can feel distant, unclear and stressful. Different laws, unfamiliar notarial procedures, and an executor who doesn’t communicate can make it difficult to understand your rights — especially when you cannot travel to the Netherlands.
My name is Klaas Zondervan, Esq., and I help international heirs, beneficiaries and executors navigate Dutch inheritance law with confidence. I represent clients in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and many other countries, focusing exclusively on Dutch estates with international elements.
Whether you are dealing with a silent executor, assets spread a cross multiple jurisdictions, or simply don’t know where to begin, I guide you through every step and act on your behalf in the Netherlands.
For more than a decade, I have dedicated my practice to cross-border inheritance matters because I saw how vulnerable heirs abroad often are. Dutch inheritance law is complex, communication with local executors can be difficult, and many families have no idea where to start. My goal is to ensure international heirs have someone in the Netherlands who truly represents their interests — someone who explains the law clearly, handles practical tasks they cannot perform from abroad, and ensures that their inheritance is settled properly and fairly.
A Legal Practice Focused on International Dutch Estates
My work is dedicated exclusively to cross-border inheritance cases— situations where heirs, beneficiaries or executors outside the Netherlands face
unfamiliar Dutch procedures
complex inheritance rules
a silent or uncooperative executor
assets spread across several countries
difficulty obtaining information or documents
In some matters this also includes complex inheritance cases involving paternity,
where the first question is determining who is legally an heir under Dutch law, particularly when recognition happens after death.
I help foreign heirs understand their rights, make informed decisions, and overcome the practical and legal barriers of Dutch probate.
I recently helped two U.S.-based heirs resolve a stalled Dutch estate with assets in three countries — all without them needing to travel.
What You Can Expect When Working With Me
Clear explanation of your rights in plain English
Full representation in the Netherlands — no travel required
Direct communication with one lawyer, not a team of assistants
Quick assessment of executor behaviour
Remote handling of Dutch paperwork, banks, notaries, tax forms
Guidance through every step of the probate process
I completed both:
Specialist Training in Estate Planning
Specialist Training in Estate Liquidation
This advanced legal education gives me in-depth knowledge of the Dutch Civil Code, particularly Dutch inheritance law (Erfrecht) and the rules governing probate, executors, heirs’ rights and the settlement of estates.
I am frequently appointed by Dutch courts as liquidator of complicated or disputed estates. These appointments reflect independent confidence in my ability to manage estates fairly, transparently and in accordance with Dutch law.
Through this work, I’ve gained extensive practical experience when:
executors fail to act or communicate
heirs live abroad and need a representative in the Netherlands
estates contain assets in multiple countries
disputes arise over the administration, distribution or validity of the estate
I am registered with the Dutch Association of Legal Advisors (NVRA), where I served on the national board from 2018 to 2021.
I am fluent in Dutch and English, and was sworn in as a court-authorized English translator at the District Court of The Hague — an important asset when communicating with foreign heirs and reviewing international documents.
I am also known in the Netherlands as the inheritance expert on the national TV program “De Erfgenaam” (“The Heir”), where I help families trace missing heirs and recover unclaimed estates.
Contacting a lawyer abroad can feel overwhelming — especially when Dutch laws and procedures are unfamiliar. I’m here to guide you step by step.
